Our Mission

 

The University of Illinois at Chicago’s mission underscores the goal of educating global citizens equipped to thrive in diverse cultural contexts. The Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies takes up this challenge and makes it the philosophical core of all of its programs.

 

Our programs, undergraduate and graduate, are nurturing and stimulating places to grow intellectually and discover the significant opportunities that a major, double- major, minor or graduate degree in Hispanic and Italian Studies make possible for your professional advancement.

 

 

Our Programs

 

BA and Minors
Our bachelors and minors in Hispanic Studies, Teaching of Spanish, Spanish-Economics, and Italian fulfill the dual objective of building students’ competence in a foreign language while developing cultural awareness and critical thinking skills. These proficiencies are highly sought in today’s global marketplace.

 

The M.A. and Ph.D. in Hispanic Literary and Cultural Studies and Hispanic Linguistics encourage innovative and independent research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries.

 

The department also offers a separate Master in the Teaching of Spanish, the only program of its type in the Chicagoland area. It includes a Concentration in Heritage Speakers, making its curriculum unique in the country.
